Migrator, a 1963, 40 ft, classic wooden ketch was built in Japan by master craftsmen. Custom plans, inspired by Herreshoff lines and Lloyd’s Rules were developed by an American naval architect and implemented in Japan by master craftsmen. The concept was created with open ocean crossings in mind. During the ‘60’s and ‘70’s she was based in Japan where she participated in local and international ocean racing, surviving typhoons in two different Tokyo-to-Okinawa races. Migrator was sailed to America by her original owner and two companions during a 57-day voyage in 1982. There, she was sailed regularly from her slip at San Diego’s Southwestern Yacht Club until title was transferred to her second owner in 1997. Since then she’s been at Long Beach’s Shoreline Marina.

Migrator is unique in her construction and choice of materials. The hull is copper-fastened, double-planked, hinoki-over-teak. Hinoki, the material of choice for hot tubs because of its wet-dry dimensional stability, provides a dry envelope without use of caulking. With no caulking the hull is essentially maintenance free and has an appearance often mistaken for fiberglass. Structural elements are of kaoki, a strong dense wood similar to oak; the transom, deck, cabin trunk, and interior are of teak. Virtually all metal parts are either stainless steel or bronze; aluminum is avoided.

The original engine was replaced in 1974 with a 3-cylinder, 40 HP Isuzu diesel. A fair number of these industrial utility engines were “marinized” by a father-and-son team in Costa Mesa and sold under the Pisces name. With her 130-gallon stainless steel fuel tank Migrator is able to cruise under power, 24/7, for approximately a full week.

Water is stored in two 150-gallon stainless steel tanks. Prior to the advent of RO water makers this was a major consideration for long crossings.

Steering is based on the Morse-type arrangement using lead screws instead of cables and pulleys.

Originally fitted with double forestays and hanked-on fore sails, Migrator was recently refitted with a roller furling genoa. The original roller-reefing main boom is still in place but the new mainsail is equipped with reefing grommets.

Electronics are basic VHF and loudhailer. A music system was recently added.
